Managing Your Childââ¬â¢S Media Use In Three Easy Steps. Itââ¬â¢S
Managing Your Childââ¬â¢s Media Use in Three Easy Steps Itââ¬â¢s never been easy to be a parent. Today, itââ¬â¢s becoming increasingly more complex as the field of digital technology rapidly expands, leaving parents in a tailspin. A Google search of ââ¬Å"kids and technology useâ⬠returns over five million results, all of which offer their own two cents about the ideal way to raise children in the digital world. How could anyone possibly navigate his or her way through that? What is one supposed to make of constantly changing information regarding healthy media habits? Iââ¬â¢m here to offer three simple steps parents can take to solve the problem of how to use media with your young children. Be educated. Be smart. And donââ¬â¢t be afraid. The first step--becomingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦They state that, ââ¬Å"Experiences in infancy establish habits of seeking, noticing, and incorporating new and more complex experiences, as well as schemas for categorizing and thinking about experiencesâ⬠(Hart Risley, 2003). The paper goes on to explain that children who were exposed to more language and diverse vocabulary themselves expressed more utterances, and utterances that varied in vocabulary use. It doesnââ¬â¢t take a rocket scientist to understand that interacting with children is a positive way to stimulate them cognitively. But this begs the question how should parents interact with the children? When it comes to interacting with children using media, the definition of positive interactions becomes more ambiguous. This is where the idea of co-viewing comes into play. Co-viewing is just as it seems--watching something with another person or several people. For young children and their parents, co-viewing facilitates the cultivation of shared experiences, ensures comprehension support from parents, and allows parents to monitor the content their children consume. The notion of co-viewing extends far beyond simply sitting next to a child on a couch and passively watching Sesame Beginnings, for example. Co-viewing implies parental engagement with the child and the program. Pointing and saying things like, ââ¬Å"look at the piano! Globalization perpetuates economic interdependence between countries. Through the increasing volume of goods and services transferred across borders, globalization has created international capital flow and boosted the rapid diffusion of technology. According to Dr. Ismail Shariff, ââ¬Å"globalization is the worldwide process of homogenizing prices, products, wages, rates of interest and profit.â⬠Three forces control the manner by which globalization furthers developments. These factors include the role of human migration, international trade, and integration of financial markets. By discussing the pros and cons of globalization, a correlation between these factors reveal the intertwined web known as world trade. Thomas Friedman once said,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦but only left to find out the way in which it can be employed with the greatest advantage. Determining what county has the comparative advantage is at the core of globalization. As a result of countries being able to maximize their manufacturing abilities, productivity and living standards rose in surrounding locations. Outsourcing production to other countries creates jobs in remote locations. In addition, globalization creates global competition. Global competition allows nations with the comparative advantage to produce goods at a cheap cost, which keeps prices low for consumers. By keeping prices low, counties are able to decrease the opportunity for inflation to derail economic growth. Furthermore, globalization spurs innovation and presents the market with new innovative ideas formed to global collaboration. Technological innovation is among the many benefits of globalization. Globalization and unfettered capital flow, grants the United States access to foreign investment and allows the interest rates to remain low; in turn, allowing consumers to invest more in the economy. While globalization has had its benefits, there are also controversial consequences as well. Those opposed to globalization draw their conclusion from the understanding that millions of Americans have lost their jobs due to factories and productions being shifted too other countries. For example, Samsung home appliances product line might include refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioner, vacuum cleaner and others. Other example, Samsungââ¬â¢s mobile phones are divided into product lines based on the following features; touch screens, slider or folders, QWERTY keyboards and ar phones base on the product price, product quality, who the product is aimed at target group, and product specification. Product lines help to manage their products as product strategy can be designed around product lines. Samsung has offered more than one product line with the product that are all closely related. Different type of product line might toward different type of segmentation based on the customer. Samsung try to expand its business is by adding to its existing product line. This is because people are more likely to purchase products from brands with which they are already familiar and confident. Product Introduction The introduction of Samsung Galaxy Note in the year 2011 popularized the term Phablet, mainly because of its large display screen. Now, the updated version of Galaxy Note is released. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 comes with many high end features and it runs on Android 4. 1 (Jelly Bean) OS. Samsung Product (Luxury Product) Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is a luxury good. A luxury good is a product that not necessary but which tend to make life more pleasant for the consumer, often more expensive and primarily purchased by people with more wealth and income. In other words, as people receive more income, they devote an increasingly larger share of income to the purchase of luxury goods. This is because Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has just concentrated on market segment that are high income. People will purchase the Samsungââ¬â¢s product although with a high price as their income increases. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has a many competing brands in the market such as Nokia, Apple and HTC. These alternative brands also offer the same products but with different features. Complement and substitute Substitution effect is always negative for Samsung, that is because consumers will always switch from spending on higher-priced goods to lower-priced goods ones. For example, if they are not satisfied with the price of Samsung Galaxy note II, definitely they will seek for other products which have same function and cheaper than Samsungââ¬â¢s smartphone such as Sony Ericsson, Iphone5, Nokia N9. Those competitorsââ¬â¢s product is strong enough to compete with Samsung because their products are quality and cheaper than Samsung Galaxy note II. In conclusion, those threats will definitely decrease the demand for Samsung Galaxy note II. But, the one reason which differentiates the Samsung Galaxy note II with another product is their complementary products. The complementary products which exist in Samsung Galaxy note II is a removable battery, memory expansion via a micro SD slot and a built-in stylus, The S pen, that help users work well in their handwritten note and simple drawing. You read "Mobile Phone and Samsung Galaxy Note" in category "Papers" Those complementary products helped in increase of the demand of Samsung Galaxy Note II. Market Structure Samsung Company had been categorized as oligopolistic market structure because they have only a few sellers such as Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson and HTC. Even with such small amount of firms, they manage to control all the market. Other than that, Samsung products are classified as differentiated product because they set the price on different product with different design. This market structure had high barrier to entry because it is too costly or difficult for potential rivals to enter the market. Besides that, irms that are interdependent such as Samsung and LG are mutual interdependence. A firm operating in a market with just a few competitors must predict the potential reaction of its closest rivals when making its own decisions. For example, if Samsung Company wishes to increase its market share by reducing price, they must also predict the possibility that close rivals such as Nokia and HTC, may do such action too. Furthermore, the firms under oligopoly market structure are price maker; this is because they set the price by themselves, not determine by the government. The Samsung company also do a lot of advertisments to promote their products so that the comsumers will know about their products through multimedia such as televesion, radio, newspaper and internet. Part 2 Compare the price of Samsung Galaxy Note II with Nokia N9 The price of Samsung Galaxy Note II with 1 year contract is about RM 1899 than will be higher the Nokia N9 for RM 699. The price of Samsung Galaxy Note II without contract is about RM 2299 and for Nokia is RM1199. The price gap between the Samsung Galaxy Note II and Nokia N9 will be RM 1200 with contract and RM 1100 without contract. The reason the price of Samsung Galaxy Note II will higher than Nokia N9 is the technical specifications of the phone. The product differentation would be Samsung Galaxy Note II is counting on a totally different approach across the entire Android ecosystem with diversity but for the Nokia N9 is just using the normal windows software as the processer. This cause the Samsung Note II became the world best smartphone for now and the customers will be proud and happy when using the phone. Besides that, the Samsung Galaxy Note II has a Quad-core 1. GHz Cortex-a-9 chip as the processor and with 2GB of RAM as for the Nokia N9 used 1 GHz Cortex a-8 ship as the processor with 1GB of RAM. Obvious the Samsung Galaxy Note II will react faster than the Nokia N9 because of the internal build-in. The customers now a day would prefer better and faster software even through the price will be higher but they will statifisfy with it. Other than that, will be the advertisement of Samsung Galaxy Note II and Nokia N9. The Samsung Galaxy Note II was released at 30 August 2012 that will be 1 day before Merdeka day. The Samsung Company rabs this opportunity to promote their new product by giving discount to attract more customers in the day of Merdeka. They also promote through television, internet, newspaper and as a banner at roadside. With this huge promotion, they are able to profit their sales. As for the Nokia N9 was released at 21 June 2011. At that time the Nokia company do not promote their new product rapidly and there are just several people know about the Nokia N9 and also don not notice that it was quite a useful smartphone. Because of the lack promotion of Nokia Compan y, they are not able to set the phone at higher price. Furthermore, in this modern world the Samsung Company already achieved a standard brand name compare to Nokia Company because the qualities of the products is better. The Samsung product automatically will have a greater cost of production than Nokia product. The costs of production of Samsung Galaxy Note II also higher than the Nokia N9. Because Samsung Galaxy Note II is more advance in design, body shape, internal software used and better sound system than Nokia N9. So the cost of production also will be higher. The Samsung Company is willing to produce and sell a greater quantity of Galaxy Note II because the product price is high. Samsung Company hopes that the brand new Galaxy Note II will be the greatest smartphone for the year so they put effort on it. Conclusion is that Samsung Galaxy Note II is better, faster and performance well than Nokia N9. Samsung company promote their new product but Nokia company do not and with the reason above will be why the price of Samsung Galaxy Note II will be higher than Nokia N9. Part 3 The market structure of Samsung company is oligopoly which proven by a few characteristic. The first one is a few sellers which control the most of the market. It sells differentianted and high barriers to enter the market for new firms. From the Samsung firmââ¬â¢s viewpoint, there are a few advantages and disadvantages of being an oligopoly. The first advantage for the firm is high barriers of entry for new firms. This is because the exclusive financial requirement to start the business which can prevent the small firm from entering the market. This can avoid the profit being shared to other new firms. The company also needs to spend money on the Research and Development (RD) to do new products which needs large money. This is to prove that the new entrants no easily if they want to enter the market. Secondly, oligopoly encourages firms to make efforts to innovate and produce more advanced product because all the firms are crazy about winning a more competitive place in the whole market. For Samsung Company, it tries to design the phone that suit for most of the consumers with the latest technology and resources they have. For example, Samsung galaxy note II is a popular phone among the consumers because of the design, the function, and the size of screen which preferred by the consumers. This can increase the profit of the Samsung Company when the sale of phone is increasing. On the other hand, the disavantage from firmââ¬â¢s viewpoint is high cost spent on adverstiment and Research and Development for the product. This can increase the input cost and the firm will set higher price for the product to cover the cost. The company has to spend money to develop a new product. After developed a new product, the company has to promote the product through television, internet, newspaper and radio. This is to inform the consumers that there is a new product launched by Samsung Company. Furthermore, there are strong competitors like Apple Company, Sony Company and somemore which can compete with Samsung Company. Some of the consumers like to buy iphone and some like to buy Sony phone. Samsung have to launch new products which can give the cosumcers high satisfaction to maintain the position in the market. If other company able to produce a new phone which bring higher expactation than the consumers expact, the consumers will buy the new phone. This can reduce the buyers to buy the Samsung Companyââ¬â¢s product. In the consumerââ¬â¢s viewpoint, the advantages of buying a product under oligopoly market structure is the consumers can easily make price comparison among the few companies. Consumers can compare the phone price between the phone companies such as Samsung, Nokia, Iphone, Sony and somemore. As comparison done, they will choose the phone with suitable price which equivalent to the quality of the phone. For example, the consumers will think about the features of the phone and look at the price. When the consumers are the office workers, they will prefer Samsung Galaxy Note II because the screen is bigger and there is a pen used to write things on the phone which makes the phone act like a note book. The second advantage for the consumer is the consumers can expenrience new phone with different features. Because of strong competitors between these companies, the companies have to design new phone with the features that can attract consumers to buy it. This can make the consumers have many choices of phones which have different features. However, the disadvantage of consumers buying the product under oligopoly market structure is the firm is a price maker which means the companies can determine the product by themselves. This can harm the consumers because as the company is a price maker, the company can set higher price to earn more profit. But this can make the consumers have to pay higher price. Besides, the disadvantage for consumers is the differentiated products. The consumers have to choose which one phone is better. Sometimes, it will be confusing when chosing the phone with different brand, different quality and different price. At this time, they have to think deeply before purchasing a phone because one phone is very costly. Part 4 In conclusion, the assignment is very useful to us. we find out that Samsung Company is operated under oligopoly market structure. Byung-Chull Lee has set up the Samsung Company with small business and takes over by Kun-Hee Lee after Byung-Chull Lee has passed away. The business start to expand globally at the end of 20th century. This can show that Samsung Company is slowly developed and required a large financial requirement. Under Samsung Company, it sell different types of products such as refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioner, vacuum cleaner and others. But in this assignment, we only focus on the Samsung mobile phone. In mobile phone market, there are only a few sellers such as Samsung, HTC, Apple, Nokia and Sony who control most of the market. Samsung Company is selling differentiated products which mean the phones have different in term of price, features, design, and quality. This can let consumers have different choices of chosing a phone. Samsung Company is a price maker which means the company can determine the price of the phones by themselves. Under oligopoly market structure, there is high barriers to entry for new entrants because the start-up cost requires large money to set up the company. Samsung Company also do a lot of advertisment when a new phone is launched through television, radio, internet, newspaper and the banners along the road. In my observation Based on the research done on this assignment, we find out that the concept of oligopoly can apply on he realistic life. The characteristic of a firm under oligopoly is shown as above and is applied in real life. Besides, we have come out an assumption about the price changes and the demand. If the price of the product increases, the quantity demanded for the product would decrease. Using the logical thinking of a consumer, people would definitely buy more of a certain product if the prices w ere lower. Besides that, according to the law of diminishing marginal utility, buyers would receive less satisfaction when they buy more units of a product. Hence, consumers would only buy if the prices were lowered. Another reason is because when the price increases, the buying power of consumers would decrease as they are unable to buy as many at higher prices as at lower prices. This is basically known as the income effect of a price change. Besides that, if the price of the product increases, consumers could choose and buy other substitutes available in the market. Hence, the quantity demanded would also fall. This is known as the substitution effect. As for the supply, if the price of the product increases, the greater the quantity supplied. This is because the higher prices are an incentive for the producers to produce more of a good in the form of profits. My empirical findings in this research does not fulfilled my expectations regarding economics. This is becauset the concept of price decrease and demand will increase will not very appliable in real life because there are many factors to influence the decision of consumers to buy a new phone which are brand, quality, the features, the income of the buyers, and the promotion such as free gifts and free vouchers. Better quality of phone even though with higher price, the demand of the phone still increase. Phone with many features will cost higher price. If we intend to establish a company, we will chose to enter oligopoly market. This is because the market is only a few sellers but many buyers. With the characteristic of a few sellers and many buyers, we can control most of the market and earn profit in the long run. Our company also sells differentiated products like phones which can give consumers a lot of choices to choose the phone which suit them. Our company also needs to advertise our products to stimulate the awareness of the consumers through television, radio, internet, newspaper and banners along the road. Even though oligopoly market structure has the characteristic of high barriers to entry for new entrants, we can start from a small company and slowly become a big company like Samsung Company or we can team with other people to set up one big company and divide the profit equally. Communications Program Profitable Business
Question: Describe about the Communications Program for Profitable Business. Answer: Scenario 2: Devise a communications program which announces a reduction in staff when the company has just announced record profitability. Audience analysis The audience to this communication program are the employees at the organization. It is ideal to note that the employees are diverse in their career and comes of them are even more educated that their supervisor. On the other hand, it is also vital consider that since the employees are from various departments, there could be gap in the ways to address their issues (Coombs, 2014). Therefore the need for the communication plan is to be able to bridge the gap that exists in this communicating. Having to inform the employees that they is a reduction in the number of staff just after huge profit announcement, is another challenge on board (VlÃâÃâduÃËâ⬠ºescu, 2014). The nature of my audience is that they are very fast in asking questions, most of them are aware of the laws in place in order to manage what they have when promoted to, they are also very fast in making harsh decisions. Since the organization is also not ready to be filled by court cases, a communication program t o address the above should also consider their traits or characteristics (Dainton and Zelley, 2014). Communication goals There are two side of this plan, the first will try to define the short term goals of the communication plan, while the other will consider the long-term goals of the plan (Stacks and Salwen, 2014). The short-term will be there to explain what should be done within three weeks of implementation of the plan and the long-term will be the after effects or the impacts of the plan to the audience. Short-Term Objectives The first issue is to make sure that the audience gets to know the message and that an advocacy session is undertaken to ensure that they are also not affected by the information or the message shared to them by the company (Dainton and Zelley, 2014). Secondly, to make sure that the HR department send to the employees a later to inform them of the actions of the company as well as the reasons that the company has opted to undertaken the same (Garvey, 2014). Lastly, to inform the labour unions about the decision of the company to lay-off some of its staff despite their profit making venture. Long-term Goals or Objectives The long-term goal is to make sure that the company reduces the labour-costs by 40% and to maximize its profits in order to meet the needs and the objectives of the organization in order to increase access to proper funds and expansions (Hybels, 2014). Besides, the company has a long-term goals of getting better experts. It will conduct recruitment and selection process and ask the employees that will the company to reply if they meet the requirements that will be posted over the media as well as over their personal emails (Kasper and Kellerman, 2014). Communication process Planning The planning process will start with getting the needed information the then performance of the employees. A performance appraisal will be undertaken to get the best and performing employees. A good number of employees will be assigned to do this task. This will take place in two weeks (Kasper and Kellerman, 2014). Implementing The communication plan will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will be informing the employees of the plans that the organization has as well as explain to them the reasons why the company has opted to do that. Likewise, it will also incorporate informing the labour unions of the reasons it has opted to do as well as the remedies it will take to compensate the employees (Legutke, Thomas and Candlin, 2014). Notwithstanding the compensation of the employees, the company is planning to implement the same by helping some of the employees to get employment in other agencies and organizations (Rogers, 2014). It is ideal that external team will be employed to make sure that the above is being undertaken in the best way and to the interest of both the organization as well as that of the employees be laid-off (Wenger, 2014). Scenario 5: You are the chair of a local community service group. How would you encourage attendance, participation and commitment from members? Audience analysis The audience in this case are all the members of the community or the entire people in the community. This will take cleaning of the community environment on the last weekend of the week. However, the members or the people are not easy to convince especially when cleaning. In addition most of the members are working, hence they consider weekends as vital time to take their families out especially being with their children. On the other hand, the audience has habit of not hearing anything from the community leaders, this means it will be very hard to communicate the same to them, and they are always in doors (Legutke, Thomas and Candlin, 2014). Communication goals I am trying to inform the general public especially the community that it will be of great importance to have the environment clean. It is an ideal path to consider all of them take part or participate in the cleaning haste on that weekend. This will be done in two-fold, short and long-term (Richards and Schmidt, 2014). Short-term To make sure that all the members of the community are able to participate in the one day event in order to clean the environment. To help the community come up with another day of such an event such that the community could be a better place to be. Long-Term To take part in environmental cleaning exercise so that we as a community can conform to the needed regulations and rules set aside by the government (Richards and Schmidt, 2014). To encourage the people to take part in the event as well as participate in the same Communication process I am planning to make sure that we inform all the people in the community about the event from door to door. In addition, banners will be place as well posters will be posted. On the day of the event several buses will be set aside to assist in the process of moving the people from one place to the other or move them from their homes to areas of interest. Are Americans Better Off essays
Are Americans Better Off essays The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of Americans now versus one hundred years ago. Specifically, it will state the reasons Americans are better off, with specific examples. Americans are much better off today than they were in 1904 for a variety of reasons. We have more technology, more medical understanding, and more education to create better futures for ourselves. Americans lived simply in 1904, and we live much better today. There are many reasons why we are better off today than Americans who lived in 1904. Technology is one example that is quite important to our lives today. We use computers in every area of our lives, and they make it easy to access information, to do our jobs, and learn more about the world. Computers have changed the way we live our lives, and they make a lot of what we do much easier. Of course, computers are not the only technologies that we enjoy today; there are many other things we take for granted today that people did not enjoy in 1904. For example, there were no televisions, radios, or x-boxes in 1904. In fact, while the telephone had already been invented, only about 8 percent of the homes in America had telephones by this time (Varner). News traveled much more slowly then. They had the telegraph and newspapers, but no Internet, and no way to get instant information about important things. Technology is very important in today's busy economy, and news travels much more quickly. In 1904, the things we take for granted today would have seemed like science fiction, and that is one reason that technology makes us much better off today. Medically, we are also much better off than the people of 1904. In 1904, people still died of things like diarrhea. One historian notes the "Leading causes of death were influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis, diarrhea, heart disease and stroke, in that ord...

Management Fundamental Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Management Fundamental - Case Study Example This organisation is facing considerable pressure meet a deadline for a military clothing contract, or suffer severe financial penalties. Should production stop at any time the delay could cost up to AUD$500 per minute. This manufacturer specifically produces outdoor and work wear. Currently, there is significant discontent amongst workers. There are three maintenance fitters who are salaried, and are eligible for overtime payments. Each fitter is responsible for the machinery in 5 production lines. The line of report is direct to the foreperson. Currently this group of fitters is unable to meet maintenance scheduling commitments without working overtime, and repair jobs are taking longer than in previous peak operating periods. A production manager has responsibility for the operations of these lines, and reports directly to the managing director, who is a major shareholder in the company. This production manager is salaried, not entitled to overtime or productivity bonuses, although a company car is included in this individual's remuneration package. Ostracism of workers from lunchrooms and tea breaks, and vandalism to personal property, including motor vehicles in the employee car park. This is currently limited to the shop floor personnel and is not apparent at management levels. The production manager however, has exhibited a higher than usual requirement for sick leave and often arrives up to 45 minutes late each day and takes extended lunch breaks before departing exactly on time at the close of business. Discuss the importance of national culture in a business environment Essay
Discuss the importance of national culture in a business environment and illustrate its impact on conflict in international business communication - Essay Example Understanding cultural differences is the key to successful international business communications. (Zachry. P.1) Professor Geert Hofstede identifies five ââ¬Ëindependent dimensionsââ¬â¢ (p.1) of cultural differences. The significance of Hofstedeââ¬â¢s independent dimensions is a method of avoiding misunderstanding and conflict in international business negotiations. Gary Emmons in his article The New International Style of Management, suggests that the new corporate culture may be sufficient to overcome the difficulties arising out of national cultural barriers. (p.2). A new and increasing global style of business management might transcend anticipated conflicts resulting from cultural barriers. Cultural dimensions impacting cross-national business communications are: High-versus low-context cultures, monochromic versus polychromic time, silent language, Hofstedeââ¬â¢s cultural dimensions and Maruyamaââ¬â¢s epistemological types. In high context cultures such as China and Japan, communications are conducted in an implicit manner. In low-context cultures such as the United States and many European nations, communications are conducted in an explicit manner. (Tung p.5) In many high context cultures, gift giving is prevalent and a failure to understand this aspect of the culture is liable to lead to a misconceived implication of impropriety. Moreover, when engaging in the gift exchange cultural mode with high-context cultures it is important to avoid gifts which imply bad luck or ill will. This very simple failure to understand the nature of high-context culture communication modes can lead to serious conflicts in international business communications. (Tung p.6) Cultures operating on monochromic time (m-time) believe in performing one function at a time. On the other hand, cultures operating in polychromic time (p-time) function while performing several different tasks. P-time cultures have a propensity for mixing business with

CFC's and Ozone depletion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
CFC's and Ozone depletion - Essay Example Therefore, appropriate action especially targeted against CFCs should be taken to reduce or stop the many negative effects of ozone depletion (Callan and Thomasà 238; Miller 384). The ozone layer is basically ozone present in the stratosphere which protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In the early 1980s, scientists discovered that the ozone layer seemed to become thinner and thinner, till an ââ¬Å"ozone holeâ⬠the size of North America was revealed over Antarctica. The theory largely accepted by scientists for this ââ¬Å"ozone holeâ⬠is the presence of CFCs in the atmosphere. CFCs are a family of odorless chemical compounds which are normally used in air conditioning, refrigeration, insulation, packaging, and as aerosol propellants. Chemists found out that CFCs stay behind in the troposphere because they are chemically unreactive and thus not soluble in water. Although they are heavier than air itself, CFCs can levitate into the stratosphere mostl y through convection currents, random drifting, and the violent mixing of air in the troposphere. Once they enter the stratosphere, the CFC molecules separate under the impact of the high-energy ultraviolet radiation, releasing chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and iodine atoms. These atoms are highly reactive, and so hasten the breakdown of the ozone layer in a repeated chain of chemical reactions. ... The thinning of the ozone layer allows more harmful ultraviolet radiation to reach the earthââ¬â¢s surface. Research has proved that exposure of human skin to a certain type of ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is the main cause of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. Together, these two forms of cancers make up for ninety five percent of all skin cancers, and are responsible for about 2300 deaths in the United States each year. Moreover, these ultraviolet radiations increase the intensity of sunburns and cause immune system suppression. Besides this, ozone depletion reduces forest productivity for UV-sensitive tree species, decreases the population of certain aquatic species and surface phytoplankton (and as a result disrupts aquatic food webs), increases eye cataracts in particular species, and cuts down the yield of certain types of crops. What is more, the lessening of the ozone affects air pollution by increasing acid deposition and photochemical smog. CFCs, on the othe r hand, act as greenhouse gases and make the earth warmer, thus contributing to global warming (Miller 384, 385). As a result, it is extremely important to keep the level of ozone depletion and the amount of CFCs present in the atmosphere under control. One approach towards the emission of pollutants such as CFCs can be to replace them with other cleaner substances. For example, HFCs and HCFCs can be used in air conditioning equipment and refrigeration instead of CFCs because they have a lower potential of ozone depletion. The pathways by which these substances are emitted can also be altered to prevent them from entering the atmosphere. Old vehicles mostly use CFCs in air conditioning. Therefore, it is necessary to make sure that such vehicles are serviced by qualified technicians in

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud | Analysis
I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud | Analysis Romantic poetry was strongly fascinated by feelings and the power of imagination. This inclination was mainly initiated by William Wordsworth who sought to change the face of poetry and the way his neoclassic predecessors perceived poetry. Wordsworth famously asserted his revolutionary views in the Preface to the second edition of the poetry collection called the Lyrical Ballads which was published in 1802. His ideas and aims mainly concerned the realms of language and subject within poetry. He rejected the neoclassical theory of poetry for its use of both upper-class subjects and unnatural poetic diction (Abrams 213). Although romantic poetry opposed the idea of rationalizing nature or approaching it in a scientific way, Wordsworth very much respected the law of nature and he did not seek to falsify it in his poems (Durrant 5). Nevertheless, he regarded the human mind as a tool, capable of achieving independence within the natural law; however not to refute it, but certainly able to transform it. William Wordsworth thoroughly asserted his ideas on subject and language of romantic poetry in his critical essay the Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. Thus subjects and principles proclaimed in the Preface to the Lyrical Ballads were henceforth reoccurring and omnipresent in Wordsworths work. This essay aims to illustrate that his poem I Wandered lonely as a Cloud embodies the revolutionary theory of poetry asserted in the Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. Moreover, it aims to show the intertextuality between the two compositions regarding highly romantic themes like nature, the simplification of language and the function of feelings. The first thing that strikes the reader, while reading the poem I Wandered lonely as a Cloud, is the choice of nature as a dominant subject and its exact description. The fact that William Wordsworth, like so many other romantic poets, utilized nature in his poems is likely to be originated in the contempt of the use of both elevated subjects and language. He thoroughly condemns the fact that the language of popular poetry during his time was full of gaudiness [6] and exaggerated, inane [6] diction. In the 1802 Preface to the Lyrical Ballads, he therefore argues that poetry should deal with materials from common life [7] in a [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] language really used by men [7]. Wordsworths revolutionary ideas stood in direct contrast to the predominant neoclassic notion that serious language should only be applied while dealing with noble or aristocratic subjects (Abrams 213). Subsequently, Wordsworth strongly espoused the notion of purifying language [8] in order to bring the joy of p oetry to people who lead a more rural life [8] and do not understand the sublime terms used in neoclassic poetry. In light of this concept, it becomes more obvious why Wordsworth used nature as a main subject in his work, as he did in I Wandered lonely as a Cloud. The main reason is likely to be that people who lead a rural life tend to be closer to nature than the aristocratic part of the society who lives in the city. The detailed, yet simple description of the daffodils and the landscape surrounding them, in other words the immediate and direct feelings transmitted through nature, are probably better conceivable to rural people who are very much in touch with nature. It becomes therefore apparent that I Wandered lonely as a Cloud is not solely a nature poem or a mere depiction of landscape, but that nature functions as some sort of stimulus for a poet (Abrams 214) in order to think and experience an influx [11] of feelings. William Wordsworths idea of the spontaneous nature of feelings and the calm recollection of such is distinctly visible throughout the poem I Wandered lonely as a Cloud. In order to comprehend and grasp Wordsworths complex perceptions of how feelings are to be experienced and processed, it is inevitable to first look at some excerpts from the Preface of 1802, in which William Wordsworth asserts his view on the subject of feelings, tranquility and indeed imagination: I have said that Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility: the emotion is contemplated till by a species of reaction the tranquility gradually disappears, and an emotion, kindred to that which was before the subject of contemplation, is gradually produced, and does itself actually exist in the mind. In this mood successful composition generally begins, and in a mood similar to this it is carried out. (1) Although Wordsworth describes a real poets feelings as spontaneous and powerful, he makes it very clear that a calm recollection of the original impressions or emotions is desirable. The feelings which enter a poets work are thus kindred to the immediate and original version of the feelings and cannot be regarded as uncontrolled or raw emotions (Sucksmith 150) anymore. Furthermore, Wordsworth describes a poet as someone who adapts an excessive habit of meditation [10] and is therefore capable both of mastering the overflow of feelings and later connecting feelings with thoughts. In a further chapter of his 1802 Preface, Wordsworth praises the state of enjoyment [50] a poet can reach by experiencing poetry in this way. The theory of poetic creation described above becomes very overt by dividing Wordsworths poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud into two parts. Lines 1 to 17 clearly depict the spontaneous overflow which the speaker, a poet himself, experiences while wandering along the lakeside in state of loneliness and passivity (Durrant 20). However, lines 17 and 18 of the poem signal a change in the poets perception of his experience. While I gazed and gazed (line 17) describes the initial and unreflective perception (Sucksmith 151) of the daffodils, it is the remaining part of line 17 and its succeeding stanza which indicate the meditative reflection on that perception (Sucksmith 151) by saying but little thought / What wealth the show to me had brought (lines 17-18). This last stanza thus illustrates both the calm recollection of the initial experience and the poets joy while contemplating and remembering these images and feelings in tranquility. This process of calm recollection can be seen in li nes 19 to 21: For oft, when on my couch I lie / In vacant or in pensive mood, / they flash upon that inward eye. The powerful state of enjoyment [50] caused by poetry and triggered by the initial and raw experience, as well as its later contemplation is, as described above, strongly accentuated in Wordsworths Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. It is also a reoccurring theme especially in the third stanza of the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. The speakers elevated emotional state becomes apparent in lines 14 to 16: Out did the sparkling waves in glee: / A poet could not be but gay, / In such a jocund company. In the last stanza, therefore in the period of recollection, the speaker still feels this joy, although it is a different kind of joy. It can be described as a more grounded, reflected and certainly less exuberant form of joy. The last three lines of the poem, lines 22 to 24, illustrate this different form of delight: Which is the bliss of solitude; / And then my heart with pleasure fills, / And dances with the daffodils. As has been illustrated by the comparison of excerpts of the 1802 Pr eface to the Lyrical Ballads concerning the processing of feelings and emotions and the respective passages of the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, William Wordsworths notion of poetic composition (Sucksmith 152) is highly visible and palpable in the aforementioned poem. In conclusion, I would like to stress how William Wordsworths 1807 poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud beautifully incorporates the many subtleties and visions concerning poetry that were asserted in the Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. In order to fully understand I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, it is thus of great importance to know how Wordsworth sought poets to perceive and process feelings or which language is best to use in poetry. By interpreting the poem in light of Wordsworths, at that time, revolutionary views, the strong dependence and connection of I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud to the Preface becomes evident. [1401]

Symbolic Mockingbirds Essay examples -- English Literature Essays
Symbolic Mockingbirds Symbolism is used extensively in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The theme of prejudice in the novel can be best perceived through the symbol of the mockingbird. Atticus advised his children that if they went hunting for birds to "shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (96). Miss Maudie explains this further by saying that "mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (96). Bluejays are considered to be the bullies of the bird world. They are very loud, territorial and aggressive. The bluejays represent the prejudiced bullies of Maycomb, such us Bob Ewell. Mockingbirds, on the other hand, are innocent and all they do is sing beautiful songs; they would not harm anyone. Tom Robinson is an example of a mockingbird. Tom never harms anything or anyone. The only mistake Tom made was to help Mayella and hack wood. Mayella accused Tom of raping her. When asked if Tom was the man who raped her, she replied and said that he "most certainly is" (192). He is unmistakably innocent, but still, those around him must sin and kill a mockingbird. "Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed" (247). After Tom was killed for attempting to escape from prison, Mr Underwood wrote in an editorial that...
